Ethiopian Communications Authority’s Courtesy Call to AfTLD.

On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, the Africa Top Level Domains Organization (AfTLD) hosted a delegation from the Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA). The delegation was on a learning tour at the Africa Advanced Level Telecommunications Institute (AFRALTI), after which they paid a courtesy call to AfTLD during their benchmarking visit to the Kenya Network Information Center (KENIC) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The delegation is overseeing the transition of the .ET country-code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) operations from Ethio Telecom to the ECA and is keen on strengthening its technical and policy frameworks for efficient domain management in Ethiopia.

The ECA delegation began their day at the Africa Advanced Level Telecommunications Institute, where they engaged in discussions on best practices for ccTLD management, technical infrastructure, cybersecurity, and policy development. With Ethiopia’s ccTLD governance shifting to a regulatory body, the visit provided valuable insights into domain administration and management models across the continent.

As the continental body for ccTLD managers in Africa, AfTLD reaffirmed its commitment to supporting ECA in this transition through mentorship, technical support, and capacity development initiatives. The transition of .ET to ECA marks a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s internet governance landscape. By engaging with AfTLD and other key stakeholders in the African region, ECA is ensuring a smooth, globally aligned transition that will enhance Ethiopia’s digital ecosystem.

As AfTLD, we celebrate this step toward strengthened ccTLD governance in Africa and look forward to continued collaboration with ECA and other ccTLD managers across the continent.
