They were warmly received by Mr. Barrack Otieno, the General Manager of AfTLD at the organization’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
The primary objective of the visit was to gain a deeper understanding of AfTLD’s role in the African domain name space and to explore potential avenues for collaboration in strengthening the African ccTLD ecosystem. The discussions centred on AfTLD’s initiatives, best practices in registry management, their contribution to capacity building of registries and ways in which Libya can contribute to the growth and sustainability of the domain name industry across the continent.
As part of their visit, the delegation had the opportunity to attend ICANN’s breakfast meeting on the New gTLD Program. This engagement allowed them to interact with key stakeholders and gain insights into the evolving domain landscape. The networking session provided valuable exposure to industry leaders and facilitated discussions on opportunities for Libya’s ccTLD, .ly, within the broader global framework.
In addition, the delegation visited the Kenya Network Information Center (KeNIC), where they were introduced to the operational framework of a functional registry. This session provided practical insights into registry operations, governance structures, and best practices in domain management. Learning from Kenya’s experiences was instrumental in helping the delegation envision strategies to enhance their registry services.
The visit also included a session at ICANN’s Regional Office in Nairobi, where Bob Ochieng led an insightful discussion on ICANN’s role in Africa. The session also highlighted the Coalition for Digital Africa’s ongoing efforts to unite stakeholders in expanding internet access and strengthening domain infrastructure across the continent. The delegation explored potential areas of collaboration within the ecosystem, reinforcing the importance of partnerships in enhancing digital development in Africa.
AfTLD appreciates the Libyan delegation’s visit and the enriching discussions that took place and looks forward to future collaborations with .ly to enhance the domain space in Africa, encourage knowledge exchange, and build a more resilient and inclusive internet ecosystem across the region.
